El Pinsapar: The Ice Age Forest

You are here

If you are up for a longer hike, you will be rewarded for your efforts. In the north of Cadiz province, in the heart of Grazalema Natural Park and Biosphere Reserve, we can reach the last of the ``Pinsapo” (Spanish Fir Tree) forest that once covered much of the southern Mediterranean during the last Ice Age. Reduced to less than a hundred hectares at one time, this ancient environment was almost lost, but is now the subject of intensive conservation efforts and is gradually recovering.

Note: The singular importance of this habitat can be appreciated by the strict control of access to this site. Limited access permits are allotted per day. For this reason we must confirm your attendance on this excursion with at least one week’s notice. The area is closed for much of the summer due to fire risk; therefore we cannot offer this walk between July and early October.
