Jerez Countryside
8 max
Jerez de la Frontera, Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Arcos de la Frontera
Description
Jerez, the most extensive countryside area in the whole of Spain, boast outstanding vineyards and huge expanses of cereal fields harbouring good numbers of steppe birds such as Montagu’s Harrier, Stone Curlew, Little Bustard, Collared Pratincole and Lesser Kestrel, among others.
The vast land with a combination of arable fields and scrubland and a healthy population of rabbits and Red-legged Partridges, make this place a truly relevant hotspot for the many eagles (Bonelli´s, Spanish Imperial and Golden Eagles) that frequent this area during their juvenile dispersal periods.
Spread across this territory, in the countryside of Jerez, a whole array of wetlands is to be discovered, playing a key role in the reproduction, migration and wintering of waterfowl species such as the Red-knobbed Coot, the White-headed Duck and the Ferruginous Duck, to name but a few. This is the case of the well-known Laguna de Medina and other smaller water bodies, so relevant in the face of such expanses of dry-land crops. In addition, we find other wetland systems of great ecological value, such as Mesa de Astas, with breeding populations of scarce species such as Slender-billed Gulls and Gull-billed Terns.
