Description

Los Alcornocales Natural Park, set in between the provinces of Cádiz and Málaga, boasts the most extensive Cork Oak Forest in the Iberian Peninsula and a wealth of landscapes that make it a truly special place, as seen in the flora, fauna, climate, history and cultural aspects of the area.

Its proximity to the Strait of Gibraltar and the habitat diversity, encourage the presence of raptors and large numbers of passerines as they cross the area during their migration. This phenomenon is particularly evident during periods of easterly gales, as huge gatherings of raptors seek shelter and roost in the forest.

Within this amazing forest, a number of interesting mammals can be found; such as Roe Deer, Red Deer, Badger and Egyptian Mongoose, alongside 12 species of bat, amphibians, countless butterflies, protected dragonflies of high ecological value and half the species of reptiles in the Iberian Peninsula.

It is in this protected nature reserve that the unusual laurisilva forest occur in the spectacular “Canutos” or relict subtropical vegetation that remains since remote times.
