The Cádiz side of Doñana
8 max
Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Trebujena
Description
Situated in the Northwest of the province of Cádiz, right at the Guadalquivir delta, and spreading across Sanlúcar de Barrameda and Trebujena, we find one of the undisputed top birding destinations: “Doñana Gaditana”. Protected as a nature reserve, here we come up against such valuable habitats as vineyards, orchards, pinewoods, and a outstanding combination of marshland, river, saltpans, lagoons and fish farms that keep this space with water throughout the year, offering the avian communities the perfect retreat, particularly at times of drought.
The Cádiz side of Doñana is a highly reputed site for the bird lover in Andalucía, with amazing species such as the White-headed Duck, Marbled Teal, Slender-billed Gull, Osprey, Greater Flamingo, Eurasian Spoonbill, Spectacled Warbler, Greater and Mediterranean Short-toed Larks, Rufous-tailed Scrub Robin, etc. During the spring and autumn migration as well as the wintering season, huge numbers of waders seek shelter or use the area as a feeding station on the long migratory journeys.
The nearby town of Chipiona comes with a bonus in the form of great gull and tern sightings, such as Slender-billed and Audouin´s Gulls, great wader gatherings and an unrivalled chance to see the only stable colony of Little Swifts in Europe.
